⚠️ Warning: Scam Calls Claiming to Be the Metropolitan Police

We are seeing an increase in scam calls where criminals pretend to be Metropolitan Police officers. These callers often claim that your identity has been stolen, or that your bank cards have been used or need to be collected for evidence.

These calls are scams.

How the Scam Works

Fraudsters may:

Claim to be a Met Police officer or detective

Say your ID, bank card or account has been compromised

Tell you they are investigating fraud “linked to your name”

Ask you to confirm personal details

Tell you to hand over your bank card, cash or valuables “for safe keeping” or “evidence”

Arrange for a courier or officer to collect items from your home

Pressure you to act quickly and warn you not to speak to anyone else

They may sound convincing and use police-style language or fake badge numbers.

🚨 Important to Know

✅ The Police will NEVER:

Ask for your bank PIN, online banking details or passwords

Ask you to hand over bank cards, cash or valuables

Ask you to move money or withdraw cash

Ask you to “verify” details over the phone

Send couriers or officers to collect cards or cash

If someone does this, it is a scam.

How to Protect Yourself

🛑 Stop – Do not give out any information
📞 Hang up – End the call immediately
👮 Verify – If concerned, contact your bank using the number on the back of your card, or contact police independently
🗣 Talk – Speak to a trusted friend or family member before taking any action

If you are ever unsure, it’s ok to hang up.

What To Do If You’re Contacted

Do not engage with the caller

Do not give personal or financial details

Do not hand over cards, cash or valuables

Hang up and report the call
